Gattaca Movie Critic

1. "The hero's struggle in "Gattaca" would have been more compelling were he an average fellow going up against geniuses, and not a healthy fellow going up against somewhat healthier specimens" (LaSalle).

2. "At times, a jolt of adrenaline seems called for, but at least writer-director Andrew Niccol doesn't take the easy way out. He never descends to action-movie fireworks, and Thurman gets to keep her shirt on. Clearly, an effort was made to create a serious, thoughtful movie" (LaSalle).

3. "But even on its own terms, "Gattaca" falls short. Niccol has presented a future world based on genetics, but he's concentrated only on physical attributes" (LaSalle).

1. I disagree with this statement because the movie plot made sense to me. If you aren't completely healthy, you could potentially waste time training, or be a liability to the business. I think the plot of the movie was a good choice on the behalf of Niccol. The movie would've been more compelling if it wasn't so serious throughout the entire movie.

2. I agree with this statement because the movie did seem boring at times. There wasn't enough excitement to keep the viewer interested in the entire movie. I do agree with this critic that there was an effort made to create a serious movie. I think too much effort was put into making this movie serious; It was too serious and that's why it was so boring at times.

3. I disagree with this statement because in the movie, Vincent's objective is to get into Gattaca to fly into space, but he can not be admitted because he was born with a heart problem. Vincent then borrows Jerome Morrow's genes because he is healthy. Vincent uses Jerome's blood, urine, hair samples, heartrate, and dead skin cells. This movie is clearly all about genectics. The only part of the movie that focuses on physical attributes is when Vincent is forced to lengthen his legs, and he scrapes off all of his dead skin cells and DNA to keep from leaving clues and getting caught.
