Dear mom,
I hope all is well, for the life I am currently living is more peaceful than the one I suffered at home. I have found a place to stay and I have plenty of money for now. I read a quote the other day that relates to me so closely that my mouth dropped as soon as I took a gander at it. "The sinew and hearts of man seem to be drawn out, and we become timorous desponding whimperers. We are afraid of truth, afraid of fortune, afraid of death, and afraid of each other." (Emerson). I am terrified of the evil that consumes and possesses us, such as money. I am terrified of becoming too engulfed in a little rectangular piece of green paper and the useless materials I can get with it, as you have. You continuously take your frustration and anger out on me, which is one of the reasons I left. I love this little adventure I've decided to take on my own, but that's just it: I'm by MYSELF. Happiness is only real when shared." (Krakauer 189). I am writing this letter to you, mom, because I've decided to come home. Let's grab lunch and catch up or something. Our relationship is fixable with time. I miss you; I'll see you when I arrive.
Love, Payton
